Panda-moneum ensues as baby pandas get new names and a giant welcome to Canada
Clear Channel Canada joined forces with the Toronto Zoo and OMAC (Out-of-Home Marketing Association of Canada) to organize a city-wide digital campaign announcing the new names of the first giant panda cubs to be born in Canada. Following a 4 week digital campaign that covered the entire city and encouraged the public to vote on possible name pairings for the newly born pandas, the cubs’ new monikers were revealed at a ceremony at the Toronto Zoo on Monday, March 7th. Guests included Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who quickly drove the internet into a state of delight after media outlets circulated pictures of him sitting in a Muskoka chair and cuddling the newly christened cubs Jia Panpan (Canadian Hope) and Jia Yueyue (Canadian Joy).
The campaign garnered over 18,000 votes with over a quarter of them coming from out of the country. The spots were run on large format digital displays in iconic Toronto locations like Yonge Dundas Square, Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, as well as Fairview Mall and Rutherford Marketplace in Vaughan.
Clear Channel Canada donated digital media space through the philanthropic initiative, CCC Gives. Each year CCC Gives donates over $1 Million dollars worth of free outdoor advertising space to deserving charities across Canada.
